Ommegang Abbey Ale

Elisabeth and I walked into Trader Joe's today, looking for a bottle of bubbly and some snacks. We found a champagne that I'll probably review once we open it, but they were also running a special on the Ommegang Abbey Ale

Ommegang is a brewery in Cooperstown, NY producing Belgian style, bottle conditioned ales. Their Abbey Ale is a very dark, almost opaque brown brew. The bouquet is of fruit and caramelized sugar. It's very rich, primarily caramel with a hint of chocolate. I tend to prefer things bitter, and an initial sweetness is quickly balanced by a dry, hoppy finish. It's a very well-balanced beer.

If you're looking for a nice, dark ale, this could be the one. It would pair well with strong cheeses or rich desserts.
